Neutering

Your Local, Family-Owned, Independent Vet Practice

We recommend discussing with your vet whether or not neutering is the right choice for your pet, as there are pros and cons that should be considered before making that decision.

In most cases, we recommend neutering dogs & cats from the age of 6 months old, but it can be done earlier under some circumstances. There is no strong scientific evidence that waiting for a bitch to have her first season is beneficial in and of itself, however, medium to large breed dogs (and bitches) often benefit from having extra time to fully grow and mature before neutering.

Our key message would be that neutering dogs and bitches should be discussed with your vet first as there will always be individual circumstances that should be considered.

It is important to note that after a pet is neutered, their metabolism can slow down and reduce their energy requirements by an average of 30%, consequently is it important to adjust their food-intake so that they don’t become over-weight.
