When To Act Immediately

If in doubt don't hesitate to call us for advice - we don't charge for emergency telephone advice.

Here are some of the common emergency situations you may experience with your pet. However, if you are concerned about your pet’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate to call for professional advice. We are available 24 hours a day.

Poisoning

Be ready to provide information on WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, HOW poisoning occurred and QUANTITY consumed. Keep any packaging.

Major trauma

Such as road trafﬁc accidents, fall from a height, or severe wound/bleeding.

Eye injuries

Eye injuries are generally very painful. Do not touch eye injuries or investigate further yourself.

Bloat or gastric dilation/torsion

An enlarged tummy can be a sign of gastric dilation/torsion. It is usually a problem in medium to large dogs with deep chests. An excessive amount of gas builds up in the stomach and without release of the gas the condition is quickly fatal so urgent and immediate veterinary attention is needed. Affected dogs will often salivate or try to be sick.

Burns, scalds and heatstroke

Severe pain or extreme anxiety

Severe Diarrhoea with blood

Diarrhoea with blood is common and is not usually an emergency. However, large quantities of blood or watery diarrhoea can be life threatening and should be addressed without delay.

Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more

Unconscious/collapsed animal or seizing

Fits or seizures are not uncommon and usually last just a few minutes at most and do not necessarily require immediate veterinary attention. However, if seizing continues for more than 5 minutes the animal must get to a vet as soon as possible.

Difﬁcult labour (dystocia)

More than 2 hours between births or straining for more than 30 minutes, excessive bleeding, or a foul smell, are indicators of problems and veterinary advice should be sought without delay.

Eclampsia

Seen in pregnant or feeding bitches or queens. A low blood calcium level causes the mother to present with weakness and lethargy, trembling, twitchy muscles, ﬁts and coma. Calcium treatment is needed and immediate veterinary attention should be sought.

We are here for your pet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year should your pet have an emergency.

Our out of hours consult fees reﬂect the cost of providing this service, but we aim to keep them reasonable and proportionate.

Animal welfare is our ﬁrst priority. Please do not hesitate to call for ﬁnancial reasons. You will not be charged for emergency advice given over the phone.
